A geologist by profession, he holds an MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment from Aberystwyth University and a BSc in Geology from the University of Reading, and is a Chartered Geologist, Fellow of the Geological Society and Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
